What the Christmas Story Teaches Us — On and Off the Cheer Mat
The Christmas story is one of the most familiar stories in the Bible, but it’s also one of the most powerful. Beyond the nativity scene, the lights, and the traditions, it’s a story filled with lessons about humility, obedience, courage, teamwork, and purpose — values that show up every day in cheerleading, whether we realize it or not.
1. Humility: Greatness Often Comes Quietly
Jesus wasn’t born in a palace. He wasn’t surrounded by luxury or applause. He was born in a stable, in one of the most humble ways imaginable. Yet His impact would change the world.
In cheer, we’re constantly surrounded by comparison — skills, placements, social media highlights, and trophies. But the Christmas story reminds us that true greatness doesn’t always look flashy. Showing up consistently, supporting teammates, working on fundamentals, and leading with kindness matter just as much as medals and banners.
Sometimes the biggest growth happens when no one is watching.
2. Obedience and Trust: Showing Up Even When It’s Hard
Mary and Joseph didn’t have all the answers. They were scared, unsure, and faced unexpected obstacles — yet they trusted God’s plan and kept going.
Cheerleaders experience this too. Long practices, tough corrections, injuries, setbacks, or roles that aren’t what we hoped for can test our faith and patience. The Christmas story reminds us that obedience and trust often come before understanding.
You don’t always need to see the full picture — just take the next right step.
3. Teamwork: Everyone Had a Role
The shepherds, the angels, the wise men — everyone played a part in the Christmas story. No role was “too small,” and no one could do it alone.
Cheer is the same way. Flyers, bases, back spots, tumblers, coaches — every role matters. A routine only works when each person commits fully to their responsibility. Even the smallest detail can make or break the outcome.
When everyone shows up for the team, incredible things happen.
4. Courage: Stepping Into the Unknown
The shepherds left what was familiar. The wise men followed a star with no guarantee of what they’d find. The Christmas story is filled with people choosing courage over comfort.
Cheer requires courage too — trying a new skill, trusting teammates in the air, performing under pressure, or coming back after a fall. Growth doesn’t happen in the comfort zone.
Faith and fear can’t coexist. Courage is choosing to move forward anyway.
5. Purpose: You’re Here for a Reason
Jesus came into the world with a purpose far greater than what anyone could see at the time. His story reminds us that every life has meaning and value.
Cheerleading isn’t just about performance — it’s about discipline, confidence, resilience, leadership, and community. The lessons learned on the mat often shape who we become off of it.
Your presence on your team matters. Your effort matters. Your attitude matters.
A Christmas Reminder for Cheerleaders
As we celebrate Christmas, it’s a chance to pause and reflect — not just on what we’ve accomplished this season, but on who we’re becoming along the way.
The Christmas story reminds us to lead with humility, trust the process, support one another, act with courage, and remember our purpose — values that make strong cheerleaders and even stronger people.
May this season bring peace, gratitude, and renewed motivation — on and off the mat.
